Visiting? - What to Expect

Welcome!

We'd love to have you visit. Coming to a church for the first time can be intimidating, so this page gives you a preview of what to expect before walking through our doors. Of course, we are happy to answer any questions you have at any time during your visit as well.

If you are looking for a worship home, we invite you to make Hope Lutheran yours!

Where are we?

We are located at 10391 Sudley Manor Drive, Manassas, VA 20109; our map is available for directions to the church.

There is ample parking in front of the church with no "assigned parking" other than designated handicapped spaces. So, with our blessings park anywhere you'd like.

Children of all ages!

We believe that families should worship together, but for those times when kids need a break, we offer a "Cry Room" located just off the sanctuary for restless kids and nursing infants. This room has a window that looks into the sanctuary and a speaker so that you can still hear the service. Worship bags with crayons and activities for children are available just outside the sanctuary as well.

Time is set aside during the service for the little ones to come forward and hear a message from the Pastor specially tailored for them.  We want them to know that all of God's children, young and old, play an important part in our worship service.

Announcing You

Some congregations will have you stand up and identify yourself during the service. Hope Lutheran is not one of those congregations!  We will greet you when you arrive and encourage you to stay and talk with us afterward.

What to Wear?

God welcomes all to worship on Sunday mornings, and our community extends the same welcome.  We dress to honor and respect God’s creation and that takes many forms from dresses, jackets and ties to jeans, polo shirts and boots.

Please wear what you feel is comfortable and honors our time together to worship God.

Following Along...

Church services can be challenging to follow. Bulletins are available at the sanctuary entrance. They provide a detailed outline of the worship service, including the day's readings from Holy Scripture.

Service Books that augment the directions found in the bulletin are located in each pew.

Music

Hope Lutheran has a vibrant musical program and choir that will enhance your worship experience with us.  The Cantor and Choir fill the sanctuary with glorious tones during our services, occasionally featuring piano, organ, and other instrumental soloists.

The musical portions of the liturgy are shown in the bulletin and the hymns for the service are found in the Service Books in each pew. We encourage you to lift up your voice with us to "make a joyful noise unto the Lord"!

Communion

We welcome baptized visitors who share our common confession to share communion with us. We believe the Sacrament of the Altar is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in, with, and under the bread and wine, and does impart to us forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation.  We ask that before coming to the Lord's Table, you examine your faith in these words and examine your heart for anything unforgiven. If you have any doubts or questions about this practice, please speak with the Pastor beforehand.

Communion wine is offered both in individual containers and in a chalice.

Children are welcome to come to the altar during communion to receive a blessing.

Offering

You are neither required nor expected to place anything in the offering plates.

If you do decide to share, offerings may be placed in the offering plates outside of the sanctuary entrance before service.

During the service, after the sermon, ushers present the offerings at the altar.

Special Needs

Hope is committed to creating a place where those with special needs can comfortably and confidently attend worship. We hope to minister to each member of the family so they will be able to ultimately call Hope their spiritual home.

Our building is handicap accessible. For any specific questions, the Pastor or an Elder will be happy to help you

After the Service

Refreshments are provided after both services. All are welcome to linger over these delicious offerings and to chat with fellow congregants.

Pastor Wallschlaeger (aka "Pastor Joel") positions himself at the church exit and makes it a point to speak to all before they leave the church, especially visitors. He concludes by offering each person farewell blessings for the week ahead.
